Seven national parks with excellent facilities to discover nature and enjoy scenic views. Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park, a distinctive steppe, features reed beds, marsh meadows and saltwater lakes, and is a paradise for bird-watchers, cyclists, walkers and horse-riders. Donau-Auen National Park has Central Europe’s largest continuous landscape of riverside meadows. National Park Thayatal, a valley landscape of meadows, wooded hillsides, cliffs and stretches of grassland provide a habitat for numerous rare animal and plant species. The Hohe Tauern National Park is a region of ancient forests, lush green alpine pastures, rugged mountainsides and spectacular waterfalls which offers excellent hiking. Kalkalpen National Park is home to the largest uninterrupted forest in Austria with spectacular canyons and gorges, picturesque waterfalls and lakes. Gesäuse National Park is characterised by steep mountain slopes and gorges in a valley. Nockberge Biosphere Reserve is Europe’s only high mountain national park and it boasts the East Alps’ largest pine, larch and spruce forest.
