Bulgaria has 3 national parks. Rila National Park is the largest and contains the highest mountain in the Balkans. Coniferous forests and over 120 natural lakes provide habitats for a rich variety of animals and birds. Hike along the impressive network of eco trails or try some great mountain biking routes. Central Balkan National Park has rich wildlife, hundreds of trekking routes, rocky peaks, centuries-old coniferous and deciduous forests, mountain biking trails and the highest waterfall in the Balkans. Pirin National Park is famous for its plant diversity, with over 1300 plant species. Here too there are great hiking trails as well as opportunities for mountaineering.
