Description

Sri Lanka offers a rich blend of culture and wildlife, of cities and temples, and you will be able to appreciate them all on this tour. Your Sri Lanka holiday offers a jeep safari to get close to leopards, sloth bears and of course elephants at Yala National Park. If you want to go whale watching there is an optional tour to consider. The verdant landscapes of Sri Lanka are another draw. The journey to Kandy is one opportunity to see the lush hillsides and tea plantations, and all from the comfort of a 1st class train travel. At Kandy there is the famous Temple of The Tooth located in the royal palace complex. The relic of the tooth of Buddha plays an important role in local politics as it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. The Buduruwagala Temple holds big statutes of Buddha at up to 50ft high. Dating back to the 10th century, it is possible that these were once brightly painted although the effect today is still fantastic. The Dambulla Cave Temple will leave you awestruck. Towering 150m above the plain on its rock base, the complex offers a range of amazing sights from its 2,000 years of history: one cave has over 1,500 paintings of Buddha covering the ceiling. The Horton Plains National Park, a protected area in the central highlands has a rich biodiversity in its grassland and cloud forest habitat. Some species of plant and insect life as well as birdlife can only be found in the park. The Minneriya National Park contrasts in landscape with Horton, but is no less rich in its abundant wildlife, especially amphibians, reptiles, fish and butterflies. Sri Lanka combines so many attractions that it will be hard to resist its charms, culturally, its diverse and beautiful countryside. It might be an encounter with an elephant that makes the tour that bit more special.
