A must for anyone staying in North Yorkshire is a trip to the World of James Herriot. Visitors of all ages are welcome at the former home and surgery of the world’s most famous vet. Based in Thirsk, it’s not that far from the North York Moors National Park visitor centre at Sutton Bank.

It’s open all year round, has plenty of exhibits you can touch and feel, and brings a lift to the man behind the books.

It’s the place to be to appreciate the amazing journey of the vet turned author whose way of writing about the characters and experiences in his lift captivated readers the world over. Rooms set in the 1940s create a wonderful atmosphere of a bygone age. A film show in the barn with supporting story – boards provide an insight in to the man behind the books.

A TV studio from the 1980s captures the excitement of turning script to screen. And a unique collection of veterinary equipment through the ages make this the only museum of its kind anywhere in the UK.

With interactive displays and challenges for kids, this is a fun place to be, topped of by a shop selling plenty of mementos.
